One of the motivations of tiger moms is that kids should not waste their talents. I agree with this. Underachievement is a tragedy. Without individual human achievement, there would be no great art, literature, science, technology, discovery. No civilization. I don’t see this as debatable. The discipline to achieve may not always depend on parents, but it has to come from somewhere and innate self-discipline does not appear to be a universal trait.
MMHP September 27, 2014
The only time Ru-Jun is not actively generating the Maximum Mess Humanly Possible (MMHP) is when she’s asleep.
Third Saturday in a row with no aide. This time she didn’t call in ahead of time, just a no show.
I hate the word ‘overwhelmed’ but weekends are rather brutal in this situation. Mostly jokingly but could really help the whelmedness here would be some kind of Platonic, supernumerary spouse/parent. I could not afford to pay such a person but I could house/feed/clothe them. Cultural limitations…
Chicken Noodle Soup September 20, 2014
First attempt to try to replicate my mom’s chicken noodle soup with various leftover noodles and chicken appears to be a success. Ru-Jun is gobbling it up. Took a chance on some chicken bullion that was past its date. Online sources said it should be OK. It was a bit darker than usual but it tastes fine.
Yesterday, on short notice, we met with the new surgeon (a good friend of a good friend) that we have switched to in order to have the surgery at the hospital near where I work. He was the first to look at the new post-chemo CT/Pet scan. He said the resolution was lousy so he was very cautious about saying anything. But he didn’t see anything in the liver. We’ll get an MRI and he needs to check the colon but that is not bad news.
Absurdity September 19, 2014
The existentialists are right. The universe is absurd. I not only have that absurdity but also the constitutive literal absurdity that accompanies a 6 year old.
11 hours for Ru-Jun last night September 16, 2014
Last night Ru-Jun fell asleep while I was nebulizing her after dinner. She stayed asleep (with a few brief awakenings, including one to ingest her meds, brush her teeth, and do some more nebulization) until 7 this morning. She was very pleasant this morning and it was an easy school morning. My parents went home after a really nice visit. As always, they helped us out a lot, including covering with Ru-Jun several times.
