A much better weekend September 30, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — lioutrue @ 9:12 PM

Ru-Jun managed to stay well rested and I managed to get some work done.  So everyone’s pretty happy.  We have a new Saturday aide, Elizabeth, who is very nice.  We’ll miss Debby, but she couldn’t work weekends any more.  Another busy work week ahead.  Tomorrow is also the last stage of my root canal/new crown.  Looking forward to getting that behind me and being able to chew on the left side again…

Gotta miss September 29, 2012

the departmental picnic tomorrow.  Too much work with courses and a book chapter edit to spare any leisure time.

exit Star Wars, enter Pokemon September 28, 2012

It started with Ru-Jun forcing me to get out some stuff we had stored in the closet, which were Pokemon toys from Burger King that Shian-Ren and I had collected in the late 90s in Madison.  Thus she learned about Pokemon.  Then she started watching Pokemon Battle Frontier on Kaboom, one of the kids cable’ channels.  She really started to get into it.  Then we got a Pokemon poster of the original 151 Pokemon (replacing one that we had given away to a graduate student some years ago).  Now she is watching the original episodes on DVD on her portable DVD player.  She also has a binder that we are filling with printed out pictures of her (and Shian-Ren’s and my) favorite Pokemon.  She has gradually stopped thinking about and talking about Star Wars.  I think Pokemon is much better for her age, for obvious reasons.  It’s pretty fun seeing her get into this series that we ourselves were a bit into as well…

Artistic development

Ru-Jun contines to make interesting progress in her ability to express things artistically. The yellow figure in the center is Pikachu. Note the black ear tips. The red figure (Misty) has hair, a new element.

A bad way to fly September 26, 2012

Tomorrow I am giving an exam in my new course at 4 PM that I have not written yet. Emblematic of my logistics these days.

Better September 25, 2012

Ru-Jun has been pretty good so far this week. Eating well and sleeping just OK. Really busy with teaching and exams this week. I’ve never worked with such last minute dynamics before. Not a good way to fly…

And two introvert parents.  What could go wrong?

Not our best weekend September 23, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — lioutrue @ 9:06 PM

Although things have improved this evening.  Ru-Jun was behind on sleep and not a lot of stuff went well yesterday, although we had a nice play date here with Emma, Barbara, Cater, and Emily.  Then Ru-Jun and I went to the SBU football game, which was a huge crowd.  We didn’t stay long.  Then we went to Burger King for dinner.  Ru-Jun caught up on sleep at the sitters today but was still pretty uncooperative at dinner (her only real meal the entire weekend; the rest was snacks and sugary stuff – and fast food). After a bath she has gotten good again and is playing energetically. Might be a chore to get her to sleep tonight.  That’s the job I hate the most.  I really really hate that I have to get her to sleep.  It seems like, no it is, an imposition.

Impossible September 22, 2012

Any successful scientist who has kids did not provide more than 50% of the hands-on parental care.  For male scientists, the percentage of parental care very likely averages much lower than this.  These are simple facts.

There was a moment September 21, 2012

this afternoon after Ru-Jun’s dance lesson (which went well) when we were in the store and I was folding to want after want of hers, that I envisioned myself in a Hieronymus Bosch-seque purgatory of craziness.  It eventually passed and we’ve had a pretty good evening.  I’m tired, though.  And trying not to think about how behind I am at work…
