Anti-intellectualism has probably always been an undercurrent in America, given its founding history and the history of folk populism and anti-elitism here. Perhaps the mid 20th century was a time when it receded a bit, given that brain power played a huge role in winning WWII and the Cold War and the rise of high tech and was admired popularly for these accomplishments. But anti-intellectualism seems to be in ascendance now, because of the power held by political conservatives and the control they exert over the mainstream US media. This cannot continue for long if America has any hope of surviving.
