Ru-Jun’s lungs sound terrible. She’s on 3x a day nebulizer until they clear up. When she’s awake and well fed she doesn’t seem to notice it. But still, I cringe when I hear her breathe.
Me time June 29, 2012
There’s not really a functional me right now. So there’s no real need for me time, I guess.
Work is my me time. It feels like a luxury when I actually can work for a few hours.
complicated and frustrating June 28, 2012
One way of coping with difficult and complicated days (like today; Ru-Jun semi-sick, possibly feverish, visit to doctor after she was “under the weather” at school; and generally being high maintenance), is just to relax, take things slow, one at a time, and try to marvel at how ridiculously complicated things are. It’s just amazing. But also realize that we are lucky that things aren’t worse, and plenty of people have it worse than us.
Driveway got resurfaced today. Expensive but it looks good. It was a needed job.
NPC June 27, 2012
From D&D, NPC stands for Non Player Character. I’ve been watching a bit of anime lately (One Piece) and there are very elaborate NPC’s frequently in anime stories. They are usually very interesting people who are tied to a certain place. The main character(s) are often journeying through these places and spend an episode or two dealing with the NPC’s problems or just hanging out with them. Our family is kind of like an NPC family.
Carbs June 26, 2012
I’m 5’11” and my ideal weight is about 175 (high end). I need to lose about 10 lbs. to get there. Since last year I’ve tried to remove carbs from my nighttime meal. This is tough because they are a major component of Ru-Jun’s dinner and I have to either eat them as leftovers or through them out a lot of the time. When my parents are here, they have potatoes a lot.
Up until this year I ate a lot of french fries from fast food places for lunch. This calendar year I’ve been trying to cut that out. I would say that my overall efforts have reduced my carbs by something like one half. I’ve been able to maintain weight. Working out now is helping. And I started to do some walking several weeks ago but have had a hard time keeping that up because of my schedule.
Good friends June 25, 2012
Ru-Jun and her good friend from school Haley, a couple of weeks ago. Haley will be going to Kindergarten in the fall. Hopefully they can still see each other every once in a while after that.
At the playground today June 24, 2012
Ru-Jun met a very friendly 5 year old who introduced herself and asked her her name. Ru-Jun gave her name and said hi but was then shy for a while. But I could tell that she wanted to play with this girl. Then a 6 year old showed up and the 5 and 6 year old were going around playing. At that point Ru-Jun really wanted to be included but she couldn’t get them to acknowledge her. But I encouraged her to persist and she eventually sat with them and talked with them and then they went around a little bit together. She was so happy. This was a pretty interesting process to watch. I had a nice chat with the dad of the 5 year old. They are in the Rocky Point school district so maybe we’ll see them again.
Force of will again June 23, 2012
A mind frame with which it is hard to deny congruence: Ru-Jun doesn’t have the discipline that I would like her to have because I don’t have the mental discipline to concentrate on her like a laser when she does everything. My mind needs freedom to rest. She necessarily must be on her own in many moments. And when she is out of my vision/voice command/control, my mental impression is that she drifts, and chaos builds. Like the natural tendency for entropy in the entire universe.
Mac & Cheese June 22, 2012
I learned from my mom how to make good mac and cheese from macaroni (or any pasta), velveeta (or any cheese that melts well), butter/margarine, and milk. But I also have experience with box mac & cheese. Different but also pretty good and liked by Ru-Jun. Tonight we tried the individual serving microwave-cook version with the cheese powder. Turned out good and is extremely easy. Also, I like the serving size. Ru-Jun ate the whole thing. Which means I don’t have to help; I’m trying to cut down on pasta. We will be switching over to this method for a while.
